Goal met

For every photo donated, Johnson & Johnson gave $1 to mothers2mothers. That $1 made it possible to send text messages to eight mothers living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, teaching them how to prevent HIV-transmission to their babies. Donate a Photo launched the addition of the mothers2mothers cause at TEDMED 2013.

Over 1.5 million pregnant women worldwide are HIV-positive. Of those, 95% live in sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 2001 as a support group for these HIV-positive women, mothers2mothers has since evolved to an international organization and a recognized key partner in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT).

mothers2mothers recently launched the United nations Global Plan Countdown to Zero campaign—an effort to eliminate HIV among children in Africa while keeping their mothers alive by 2015. This campaign follows the same model that mothers2mothers was founded on: enlisting new mothers, living openly with HIV or AIDS to support their pregnant peers. These women are known as Mentor Mothers and are the reason for the organization’s resounding success.

Johnson & Johnson supports mothers2mothers as part of the Every Mother, Every Child initiative to increase life expectancy and quality-of-life for women and children in the developing world. And mothers2mothers is one of 200 organizations Johnson & Johnson works with to improve the health of women and children around the world.
