SOS Children’s Villages is the largest organization devoted to the care of orphaned and abandoned children. As an organization, we build families for children in need, while helping them shape their own future and contribute to the development of their communities. We believe that every child deserves quality education, access to health care, and above all, a loving home and a family to support them. With 545 villages in more than 130 countries and territories, SOS Children’s Villages is helping to raise over 82,000 children.
Since the outbreak of violence in 2011, Syria's brutal civil war has claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people and has left 5.6 million children in poverty, displaced or vulnerable to violence. SOS Children’s Villages and the Syrian Trust for Development opened the first child-friendly space in Damascus in November 2013 to provide psychological support to internally-displaced children. At our three child-friendly spaces, which are managed by trained volunteers, Syrian boys and girls have a chance to play with friends, read, draw, watch movies, perform theater, and play sports. There are also counseling sessions for parents and psychosocial support for traumatized children. SOS Children’s Villages will open additional child-friendly spaces in Syria this year.
